The Belgian glass group Glaverbel and Turkish company Sisecam, through its subsidiary Trakya Cam, have agreed to participate in a bid for Gerom, a Romanian state controlled flat glass company. The tender to the Romanian authorities will be based on an investment and industrial plan for modernizing and upgrading the existing operations. Gerom, the Romanian joint stock company with 51% state ownership, is specialized in the production and processing of flat glass. The company presently owns equipment for sheet glass, patterned glass and automotive glass, but currently, only automotive glass is in operation. Gerom is currently being privatized. Sisecam, the Turkish company whose main activities are the production of flat glass, glassware, glass containers and chemicals. Sales in 1999 amounted to US$ 1.2 billion. The company employs 13,500 people. Glaverbel, the Belgian flat glass producer, has a strong industrial presence in seven European countries and a worldwide commercial network. It had 1999 sales of Euros 1.5 billion (BFr 60.9 billion). The group employs 13,000 people.
