7 January 1999: The 6th Glass Processing Days conference, to be held in Tampere, Finland, in June 1999 promises to break all records of the previous five conferences, said the organizers in a recent press release. The number of participants and lecturers as well as the scope of the programme will be the most versatile to date. The number of registered speakers tops 150 and the combination of thematic sessions, special short-courses and other fora for the exchange of ideas and visions will contribute strongly to the shaping of the industry“s future. Architectural safety glass issues will cover a broad range of subjects, among them the current status and outlook of insulated glass applications to pick just one example of the exciting topics, comments Jorma Vitkala of Tamglass Ltd., Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The application of safety glass to Custom Wall Structures is another theme of great and current interest. Automotive topics deal with items such as numerical modeling, which poses challenges and opportunities for OEM-manufacturers in particular. The increasing role of glazing within the automotive industry has opened new avenues for the opportunities that glass offers in the styling of automobiles, which are based on efficient manufacturing platforms of a limited number of chassis but still offer a great variety of models. As far as the Expanding applications sector is concerned, the general sessions of the conference devote considerable attention to the broadening of glass applications into new areas. All new applications are met by the same challenges of high quality, the absolute need for economical and flexible manufacturing and the special treatment required for advanced glass such as coated or insulated products. Standardization is one of the specific issues which receive special attention at the conference. This session has drawn an unusual number of high-level expertise, partly thanks to the fact that the ISO-TC 160 Plenary Meeting will be held at Tampere immediately upon the closing of the Glass Processing Days, says Jorma Vitkala. The short-courses, offered before the conference, and the social programme built around the Days make for a very concentrated event in which participants can expect to gain exceptionally much within a very focused time period. We walk as we talk, says Jorma Vitkala. The structure of the programme and the use of time for travel and stay are designed to be just as rewarding and effective as the technologies that we share. The Final Program for the Glass Processing Days, 13-16 June 1999, has now been published.
