In anticipation of the European Affordable Housing Plan and to contribute to the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Housing Crisis, Glass for Europe presents its recommendations to ensure that efficiency is considered as an enabler of affordability, not a constraint.
Between 2015 and 2023, house prices in the EU surged by an average of 48 percent. At the same time, millions of households have been struggling with soaring energy costs, further reducing disposable income. According to Eurostat, approximately 48 million people in the EU were unable to keep their homes adequately warm in 2023. For many, home-ownership is becoming increasingly out of reach.
As European institutions explore policy solutions, Glass for Europe emphasizes the crucial role of sustainable and high-performance construction materials. Advanced glazing enhances insulation, reduces energy consumption for heating and cooling, and facilitates on-site renewable energy generation through solar panels and building-integrated photovoltaics. These innovations not only improve occupant comfort and well-being but also lower energy bills and operational costs, making housing more affordable in the long run.
