1 July 1999: The construction project of a segment of fibre optical cable stretching from Poty in Georgia to Trabzon in Turkey has been agreed by the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, according to a recent press report. The Deputy Prime Minister of the government of Azerbaijan, Abid Sharifov, said that the segment in question may become one of the most important, and that construction of the segment may begin through the territory of Azerbaijan. “To construct only the Azeri segment having no deal with neighbouring states is senseless,” said Sharifov.
