In Dubai, the recently established subsidiary of Excel Aluminium and Glass Co., Excel Glass Industries, recently opened its Dh 8.5 million glass toughening plant. It is part of the company“s expansion and is aimed at enhancing the cost-effectiveness of its business as well as providing services to other glass companies and contractors. With a total capacity of around 1,000 square metres a day, the new plant can handle toughening, double glazing and structural binding jobs. It has the latest technology and equipment from the UK and Austria. “With this new facility we hope we can continue to fulfil our corporate goal of bridging the widening gap and filling up the vacuum between big and small companies. We will provide our services to other companies also,” said Rajesh Sharma, managing director of both Excel companies. According to Sharma, there are only about half a dozen toughening plants in the UAE: one in Abu Dhabi and two each in Sharjah and Dubai. Among them are Alabbar, Alico and White Aluminium. He said, “There is still room for more glass facilities like ours since there is consistent demand coming, especially from the construction industry.” The company has enjoyed growth of 40% annually. Established six years ago, Excel is a joint venture between Sheikh Ahmed Bawazir and Sharma.
