Corning Inc., the world“s largest LCD glass substrate supplier, has not yet decided where to locate the planned LCD glass substrate finishing facility on the Chinese mainland, nor how much to invest in it, said Lydia Lu, spokesperson for Corning China. The statement was intended as a corrective to widespread talk that the US-based company has chosen to locate the new facility at Shanghai. Corning is reviewing candidate Chinese cities, said Ms. Lu. Although the spokesperson declined to give details on the specific investment in the new facility, insiders estimate the amount at over USD 1 billion. Glass substrate, the upstream material for LCD panel production, constitutes over 60% of the costs of a LCD panel. At present, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen all plan to build up LCD production bases and many Chinese companies are betting on the LCD panel business.
