Clark Kinlin, president of Corning International, the sales subsidiary of US group Corning Incorporated, said during a recent visit to Taiwan that his company would continue to expand procurement from the island and seek cooperative partners through mergers or strategic alliances. According to Kinlin, Corning has recognized the strong potential in Taiwan“s fibre-optic telecom and opto-electronics industries. He said that his company had spent about US$ 7 billion acquiring fibre-optic telecom makers worldwide in the past six months. In order to cut costs and meet the demand from newly developed products, Kinlin said that Corning would expand its ties with makers in Taiwan and mainland China. Kinlin noted that, in the past three decades, Corning has helped Taiwan become the world“s largest OEM supplier of optical lenses for glasses, and has also been a major supplier of applied materials to local producers in the opto-electronics, semiconductor, and opto-telecom fields in recent years. Last year, Corning set up a US $80 million glass substrate plant in Taiwan to supply local makers of thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs).
