3 June 1999: US-based glass and optical fibre maker Corning Inc. said it has accelerated plans to open its new plant near Concord, North Carolina, due to growing worldwide demand for optical fibre. The company cited particularly strong demand for LEAF, a new optical fibre for high-data-rate applications, as one of the key reasons for beginning production ahead of schedule. The company said initial production at the Concord plant will now begin in July, rather than the previously announced fourth quarter starting date, and the plant will operate around the clock by August. According to Corning, Concord plant production will be phased in over the course of the next eighteen months. When fully operational in 2001, the Concord plant will boost Corning“s fibre-making capacity by about 50%.
