22 January 1998: Corning Inc., the world“s largest manufacturer of optical fibre, recently announced that it has filed suit against FiberCore, Inc. for violating one of Corning“s optical fibre patents. Corning said that FiberCore, Inc. has been using one of Corning“s US patents to manufacture optical fibre, and then selling it in the United States. Corning filed suit in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts and is seeking an injunction and unspecified damages. “Corning has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in optical fibre research and development since we developed the first commercially viable fibre in the early 1970s. We are determined to protect this investment and future investments by asserting our patents and protecting our intellectual property wherever necessary,” said Corning“s Director of Technology for its Telecommunications Products Division, Dr. Robert VanDewoestine. Established in 1851, Corning Incorporated creates leading-edge technologies for the fastest-growing segments of the world“s economy. Corning manufactures optical fibre, photonic components, high-performance glass and components for television, and other electronic displays and equipment for communications and communications-related industries. Corning“s total revenues in 1996 were US$3.7 billion.
