18 June 1998: The Canadian firm Nortel (Northern Telecom) has announced that Level 3 Communications, Inc. has agreed to purchase up to US$ 200 million in fibre cable products over the next several years. Level 3 said it plans to complete a global end-to-end network by the year 2001 using Internet Protocol-based technology. The company is expected to offer both metro and long distance services. Nortel and Corning Incorporated worked together on delivering the best fibre solution for Level 3 using Siecor“s Loose Tube and Ribbon Cable designs and Corning“s LEAF fibre and SMF-28 single-mode fibre. “We“re pleased to be facilitating deployment of Corning“s new fibre optic cable product to meet Level 3“s quality of service requirements,” said Mike Unger, president, Optical Networks, Nortel. Siecor is the world“s largest fibre optic cable manufacturer, and it continues to lead the industry in developing and manufacturing optical fibre and copper communications products for voice, data and video applications. Formed in 1977, the company is a major supplier for telephone companies, cable television operating companies, customer premises communications and utility applications. Nortel works with customers in more than 150 countries and territories to design, build and integrate their communications products and advanced digital networks. Customers include public and private institutions, Internet service providers; local, long-distance, cellular mobile and PCS communications companies, cable television companies and utilities. Nortel had 1997 revenues of US$ 15.5 billion and has approximately 73,000 employees worldwide.
