The Contemporary Glass Society announces that for the second year running the Society will sponsor a Glass Prize at New Designers 2011. Prizes worth GBP 2,000 will be awarded, and the overall prize will be presented to a glass graduate whose work is deemed to be outstanding; there will also be prizes for two runners up. The award will be judged by the following panel: Yvonna Demczynska owner of Flow Gallery, renowned glass artist Bruno Romanelli, Arts Council England representative Jackie Lee and CGS representative Karen Murphy. The overall winner and runners up will be announced on 30 June at New Designers and will be promoted via the CGS website and newsletter and through the New Designers marketing network. The Overall Winner will receive a prize worth GBP 1,400 which will include a GBP 250 cash prize and GBP 100 worth of vouchers from commercial sponsor Warm Glass, as well as support to help with future career: a one day photo shoot of work with award winning photographer Simon Bruntnell (worth GBP 750) and a free promotional and membership package worth GBP 400. This will include a 1/2 page of editorial in the CGS newsletter with images, an entry on the homepage of the CGS website, an e-bulletin announcement to CGS membership and free CGS membership for two years. The two Runners up will each receive a prize worth GBP 300, which will include GBP 50 worth of vouchers from commercial sponsor Creative Glass UK. They will also receive a free promotional and membership package worth GBP 250, which will include a 1/3 page of editorial in the CGS newsletter with images, an entry on the homepage of the CGS website, an e-bulletin announcement to the CGS membership and free CGS membership for 1 year. New Designers is an event held every June/July at the Business Design Centre in London, during which some 3,500 newly graduated designers come together representing the top 200 design courses from across the nation to meet industry employers, the media, trend predictors and a design hungry public. It is seen as an essential resource for all who attend and an invaluable springboard for all who exhibit. The event runs for two weeks, with nine design zones and two prestigious awards evenings. From animation to architecture, graphics to glass and fashion to furniture, New Designers is about vibrant content, celebration and reputation. It is an event for fresh thinking and aspiration. Part 1 includes all UK glass graduates and will run from the 30 June – 3 July 2011. The Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) is widely regarded as the foremost organisation in the UK for promoting and encouraging cutting edge glass and glass-makers within the wider art world. Founded in 1997, CGS is a non-profit making limited company by guarantee, with dual objectives of encouraging excellence in glass as a creative medium and developing a greater awareness and appreciation of contemporary glass worldwide. CGS is aimed at those working in or interested in contemporary glass. A voluntary committee some twelve strong made up mostly from makers, but also administrators and students, manage the society. At present, the Society has connections with over 1000 artists, academics, suppliers, collectors, galleries, and enthusiasts, and a current membership of over 600.
