President of Corning Display Technologies Taiwan (CDTT) Alan Eusden has indicated that growth in demand for glass substrate used in the mobile PC segment will reach 18% in 2010-2014, exceeding the 11% of demand growth for LCD TV. According to Eusden, global glass substrate demand is expected to reach 3.6-3.8 billion sq.ft. in 2011, and demand for LCD TV glass substrates will increase by 17% thanks to demand from emerging markets. Glass substrates for PCs are expected to increase 27%. The largest proportion of global glass substrate demand comes from LCD TV and is expected to reach 2.8-3.3 billion sq.ft. in 2014, significantly exceeding the demand of 700-8,500 million sq.ft. for LCD monitors and 650-750 million sq.ft. for mobile PCs, Eusden added. According to Eusden, the main reason for this continuous growth of the LCD display market is the increasing demand for handheld mobile devices, improving consumption in emerging markets and driving popularity, along with fast expanding penetration rates for LCD TV.
