Trade union representatives at Caithness Glass, the UK glass giftware manufacturer in receivership since 20 February 2004, are concerned that the sale of the business as a going concern could lead to the closure of the plant at Wick, in the far north of Scotland. Receivers, who are now in charge of the company, say they want to sell Caithness Glass as a functioning business. However, the Thurso and Wick Trades Union Council, as well as the 50 workers at the Caithness Glass plant and visitor center in Wick, are concerned that a potential buyer could decide to concentrate manufacturing at the firm“s HQ in Perth, central Scotland. Trades council treasurer John Deighan said that as Caithness Glass began life in Wick , it was “unthinkable” that the business should continue without the Wick factory. Trades council chairman Derrick Milnes said it would do everything it could to help keep the company“s base in Wick.
