The privatisation of Vidreira de Mocambique, has led Portuguese glass company Barbosa & Almeida to present a proposal, involving the investment of Esc 1.5 billion on modernisation. Most of the production of the Mozambican glass company would be exported to southern Africa. The president of the Portuguese company, Maria Candida Morais considers that within two years Vidreira de Mocambique would be profitable. The investment would be split between the packaging glass division receiving Esc 1.2 billion while the utility glass would absorb Esc 300 million. B & A is considering the possibility of a joint venture with the Portuguese company Crisal in this last area. Mozambique government minister Eneas Comiche visited the facilities of Barbosa & Almeida in Gaia and has said that the selection would be dictated by the technical and financial aspects of the proposal.
