Indian automotive glass manufacturer Asahi India Safety Glass plans to build a state-of-the-art facility near Chennai (Madras) in southern India. The proposed plant, the company“s second, would cater to the requirements of Asahi India“s southern customers, which include Ford, Hyundai, Toyota and the Mitsubishi Lancer project of Hindustan Motors. Asahi India currently supplies these car firms from its Rewari plant near Delhi in northern India. In addition, the Chennai plant location close to the city“s port would help facilitate Asahi India“s increasing exports, especially of laminated glass. Asahi Glass of Japan, the joint venture partner, holds a 24% stake in Asahi India. “With investments already made in the car manufacturing industry in southern India and with increasing vehicle production there, break-even volumes for economic as well as technical viability should be seen in the next 2-3 years,” Sanjay Labroo, Asahi India“s managing director.
