Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. said on 22 September 2006 that it has suspended LCD glass production at its Taiwan plant for three months due to maintenance issues. A spokesman for Asahi“s Taiwan unit said officials confirmed the shutdown during a visit by several outsiders to the company“s headquarters in Japan. “But it will not affect the supply of goods to customers in Taiwan because the company previously made preparations and adjustments for deliveries,” he said. One of the Asahi“s customers, who declined to be named, said the company had not been notified of the suspension, but that he believed that Asahi would be able to meet the needs of its customers. Asahi“s customers in Taiwan include AU Optronics, the world“s third largest maker of large liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, as well as smaller companies Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. The temporary closure is expected to affect facilities responsible for five per cent of the world“s output in an already tight market.
