Japan“s Asahi Glass Company has stopped manufacture of auto glass at its Philippine plant, in spite of the fact that the company dominates the domestic market. It is estimated that Asahi supplies tempered glass to eight out of ten vehicles sold in the Philippines. According to reports in the Philippine press on 5 February 2003, Asahi has instead chosen to seek economies of scale by importing automotive glass from its Thailand plant. Asahi Glass Philippines“ automotive glass line has been running at only half capacity as a result of soft vehicle sales in the country.
