Asahi Glass Co. and a Keio University research team have jointly developed a plastic optical fibre that the group claims is superior in transmission speed to conventional glass fibre. The two plan to commercialize the product in June. Plastic optical fibre has achieved data transmission speeds of 10 gigabits per second for exchange of high-definition video data between personal computers and other household information terminals. The product will cost the same to manufacture as existing glass optical fibre, even though it transmits data 10 times faster. It is designed to be compatible with digital broadcasting and is capable of transmitting digital-video data.
