Ardagh Glass has said it cannot rule out job losses at the Barnsley plant in northern England, acquired from Rexam as part of the packaging giant“s GBP 50 million disposal of its UK glass activities on 23 May 2005. Ardagh sales director Alex Robertson said the firm, which trades under the Rockware brand in the UK, was planning savings and productivity and quality improvements by merging the Rockware and Rexam businesses. The Barnsley glass plant has a workforce of 700 and is the second largest employer in the town. Ardagh said it intended to keep the operation running as a going concern. As well as Barnsley, Ardagh has plants in Doncaster, Worksop and Knottingley in northern England and Ayrshire in Scotland, with businesses in Germany, Poland and Italy.
