Saint-Gobain“s fully owned subsidiary Saint Gobain Glass India plans to set up the world“s largest float glass line in India at an investment of Rs 1000 crore. According to B. Santhanam, Saint Gobain Glass India“s managing director, and president of flat glass division, South Asia and Egypt, the company will set up a 950 tonne per day float glass line at Bhiwadi near Delhi, which will be its second plant after Chennai. Our plant in Bhiwadi on 140 acres will be the world“s largest float glass line and we hope to start operations there by end of 2011, Santhanam said. Saint Gobain Glass India, has, over the past ten years, invested Rs 1,700 crore in India and is, according to Santhanam, also looking at opportunities for investment in solar control and solar power glass segment. Our plan for investing in the solar power glass segment is at tandem with the National Solar Energy Mission, aiming to generate 20,000 mw by 2020. We are globally well placed in making thin film modules, cells and mirrors (concentrating heat) and right now we are assessing the Indian market, Santhanam said.
