LionGlass: Building a sustainable future for architectural glazing

LionGlass is Penn State University‘s patent-pending family of glass compositions that offers, for the first time, a viable alternative to soda lime silicate for dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of the glass industry.

This presentation reviews recent work exploring LionGlass for architectural glazing applications. This work was funded by a seed grant from the Penn State Cocoziello Institute of Real Estate Innovation. The presentation was developed by Mehmet Ozay, the Ph.D. student leading this project.

In 2024 Bormioli Luigi, an Italian glassmaker specialised in producing high-end packaging for fragrance, cosmetics and tableware, entered in an official partnership with Penn State to perform research and development with the goal of scaling up LionGlass to create bottles for luxury beauty products like cosmetics and perfume.
