Three new trials aimed at improving recycling services for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in the UK hospitality sector have received funding from WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme). The trials form part of a wider feasibility study in which WRAP is working on behalf of government to develop appropriate recycling services for SMEs and to develop good practice in the area. In the first trial, ECT Recycling, the UK“s largest community recycling organisation, will provide a glass recycling service for pubs, clubs and restaurants in Warwickshire (central England). Businesses will be provided with regular collections and will be able to choose to collect either mixed glass or color separated glass, with a greater financial incentive for the latter. One hundred and fifty businesses will be recruited to participate and will be offered a two month free trial of the service. Paper Round is a specialist office recycling businesses operating in London. Its trial will target hotels in the central London areas of Westminster, City of London, Kensington and Chelsea, Camden and Docklands. Paper Round will provide a collection service for paper, cardboard and glass. Twenty-five hotels will be recruited to participate in the trial and will be provided with wheeled bins and regular collections. The aim of the trial is to make recycling more attractive and convenient for hotels by offering them a service that collects a range of materials. Liz Morrish, SME Recycling Project Manager, said: “We are really pleased to be able to fund these trials focusing on the hospitality industry. The trials are innovative and will evaluate new approaches to recycling for pubs, hotels and restaurants. We look forward to developing good practice from the results of these trials and to working closely with the hospitality industry to make recycling more convenient and cost effective for them”.
