The following listing of chemical companies includes all those with chemical sales of more than US$ 1 billion. It gives a ranking for the 1994-1995 tax year for Japanese firms. The rankings for many firms will already have changed based on transactions that took place in 1995. It is no surprise to find Hoechst, one of Germany“s leading three firms, topping the list, with DuPont in second place, ahead of BASF and Bayer. Coming in fifth is Unilever, followed by Mitsubishi Kasei, which overtakes Dow Chemical and ICI. The listing is dominated by US, European, and Japanese companies; the largest company outside these groups is Taiwan“s Formosa Plastics, which beat several major companies such as Monsanto and Union Carbide. At the other end of the ranking, just under the US$ 1 billion mark are such companies as Engelhard, Dexter Corp., Georgia Gulf, and Wellman, which each exceeded US$ 900 million in chemical sales. The calculation of chemical sales is based on commodity and special chemicals, plastics, coatings, fertilisers, agrochemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, and cleaning products. It excludes foods, pharmaceuticals, vitamins, cosmetics, petrol, petroleum-based lubricants, and personal hygiene products, although these are dependent on individual company definitions. Intracompany transfers were counted as sales whenever possible. The capital expenditure entry generally does not include the cost of acquisitions. However, it may include R&D costs – especially at oil conglomerates – although this has been taken out wherever possible. Capital spending, R&D, and employee figures generally refer to the entire company; often just a fraction of these figures is applicable to chemical divisions.
