19 February 1998: Irish crystal and ceramics group Waterford Wedgwood plc announced it has achieved a 76.1% holding in Rosenthal AG, following the voluntary public tender offer announced on 4 December 1997. The company said that the group is now “better positioned to achieve its long term objective,” primarily to achieve luxury branded goods company status and so to boost shareholders“ returns. “We are delighted to have already achieved a 76.1% ownership in Rosenthal,” Richard Barnes, Waterford“s group finance director said in a statement. “We now have substantially increased our presence in continental Europe, further strengthening the group“s global market.” Barnes said the acquisition created a “truly global” luxury crystal and ceramics grouping with leading brands in Japan, UK, Ireland, the US and continental Europe.
