Vitro recycles approximately 60% of the glass it produces for the Mexican market and in 2006 the company processed 60,000 of the 450,000 tonnes of cullet that were generated in the country. “Care for the environment and sustainable development are today matters of priority on which companies and countries are concentrating their efforts, as shown by the Johannesburg summit in 2002”, said Albert Chico, Vitro spokesman. In Mexico, Vitro supports 151 recycling programmes in collection centres including schools, hospitals, associations, restaurants, town halls, client companies and waste centres throughout the country, as well as multiple programmes in its own facilities. The company carries out recycling at four plants. According to figures from INEGI (the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics), glass represents just 2% of the waste generated in Mexico.
