28 May 1998: Mexican glass giant Vitro SA expects 1998 exports of US$ 750 million, a hefty increase from the US$ 650 million exported in 1997, a top company official told the press recently. “Vitro“s exports last year totalled US$ 650 million, and this year we should be close to US$ 750 million, of which approximately US$ 50 million to US$ 100 million will go to the Central and South American markets,” corporate finance director Hugo Jaime Garcia told a news conference. Garcia said that the company, which specializes in flat glass and glass containers, was developing a special glass product for the pharmaceutical market in Argentina. “The markets in the south are the ones that most interest us,” Garcia said. Vitro was also investing in auto glass products for export to Colombia and has begun distributing flat glass in Cental America, he said. Additionally, Vitro was looking to boost its exports of white goods to the Caribbean and the northern part of South America through its Vitromatic subsidiary in association with the US firm Whirlpool Corp., Garcia said.
