3 September 1998: Taiwan Glass Industry Corp. will reportedly invest NT$ 1.05 billion to establish a 400-ton-per-year D450 fine yarn plant and a super thin glass substrate plant to increase sales. With its own R&D technology, the firm“s fine yarn plant will have an annual production value of NT$ 140 million, while the glass fabrics processed from the fine yarn will total NT$ 300 million per year. The establishment of the fine yarn plant will be divided into two phases, according to a recent press report. The first phase will involve generating some 36 tonnes of fine yarns, the report said. After the firm completes its second phase expansion, its total production will be up to 400 tonnes per year. The firm“s board of directors has already approved the NT$ 350 million investment in this plant. The firm has also decided to invest NT$ 700 million to establish a glass substrate plant for TFT-LCD (thin film transistor-liquid crystal display) panels. By introducing advanced technology from both Europe and the United States, the new plant will have an annual production capacity of 900 tonnes of super thin glass, the report said. The production value is expected to be worth NT$ 560 million per year. Although the local construction industry, which is one of the largest consumers of glass, is still in recession, the firm managed to register stable growth in profits over the past few years, the report said.
