Switzerland continued to be the world leader in the recycling of waste glass in 1996, when 89.3% (1995: 84.9%) of waste glass was collected for reprocessing. This is equivalent to 36.6 kg of glass per head of the population, according to Vetrocycling AG of Buelach, Switzerland. Due to the slight downturn on the Swiss glass market, the actual volume of glass collected for recycling fell 1.5% last year to 258,813 (262,767) tonnes. Swiss glass manufacturers reprocessed 112,013 tonnes of waste glass. The proportion of waste glass recycled in neighbouring countries is significantly lower than in Switzerland, ranging from only around 50% in France and Italy to about 70% in Germany and Austria, according to Renzo Radice of Vetrocycling. Switzerland boasts 82 glass recycling plants and 23 recycled glass exporters.
