US crystal manufacturer Steuben announced that it will open a new flagship store in Manhattan in the spring of 2000. At 667 Madison Avenue and 61st Street, the new location will put Steuben in the heart of New York“s most dynamic and upscale shopping district. Steuben said the move will allow the distinctive luxury crystal manufacturer to redefine and reconstruct its retail experience in a state-of-the-art, custom-built setting. Housed within the new Steuben facility, and opening concurrently, will be The Corning Incorporated Gallery, a new museum-like exhibition space dedicated to presenting glass art from all over the world. Steuben“s current flagship location at Fifth Avenue and 56th Street will be closed when the new store opens, and there will be no interruption in Steuben“s retail activity. “The relocation is an incredibly exciting move for us,” said Marie McKee, chairman and CEO of Steuben. “It is an unprecedented opportunity to rethink and redesign how to best serve our customers, how to present the extraordinary work of our craftspeople, and create a totally modern and welcoming environment that will set a new benchmark for retail experiences in the 21st century”. Ralph Appelbaum Associates of New York City has been retained for the design of the store, a firm which is world-renowned for its exhibition design expertise. Recent projects include such landmark attractions as the new Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York; the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC; the Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan; the Dinosaur Halls for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City; and the World Religions Museum in Taiwan.
