According to a survey among householders in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria by the Glass Packaging Centre, most of those questioned thought that recycled bottles were reused and were unaware that they are remelted to make new ones. The Centre informed that 72% of households in Cantabria said they deposit their empty bottles in recycling containers, according to a survey of 2,000 Spanish homes by the Perfiles Institute. The survey, carried out among housewives, revealed that the majority of those questioned did not have a clear idea as to the purpose of “glass recycling”. A mere 6.8% knew that it means making new bottles from old ones, while 89.6% confused recycling with reuse. However, 74.7% of respondents was aware that recycling had a beneficial effect and valued it as a positive action because of its results: safeguarding the environment, economic benefits, reduction of waste and cleanliness of cities. With a recycling rate of 41 bottles and jars a year, residents of Cantabria recycle five more than the national average.
