France“s Saint-Gobain plans to build a flat glass plant in Russia“s St. Petersburg region, regional governor Valery Serdyukov said 16 March 2006. Agreement on the building of the plant was reached between the regional government and Saint-Gobain at the international real estate forum MIPIM at Cannes in the week commencing 13 March 2006, according to Serdyukov. Saint-Gobain is making its choice from among several possible sites for the plant, Serdyukov said. The regional government has proposed sites in the town of Vsevolzhsk and in the Gorelovo and Krasny Bor villages, Serdyukov said. He did not provide the amount of investments planned by Saint-Gobain. The company is interested in building the plant in the region as several foreign carmakers have already opened assembly plants there and others plan to do so, Serdyukov said. The Ford Motor Company assembles Ford Focus II models in the regional town of Vsevolzhsk, Scania produces city buses in St. Petersburg, Toyota is currently building an assembly plant in the city, and Nissan is also considering the region as a potential location for a plant. In addition, Saint-Gobain may also cooperate with the Luga abrasive plant also located in the St. Petersburg region, Serdyukov said.
