Saint-Gobain Glass Romania will invest EUR 25 million in the production of safety glass for Dacia, part of the Renault group, said Pierre-Andre de Chalendar, managing director of Saint-Gobain, at the opening of the Romanian unit“s EUR 100 million float glass plant at Calarasi, southeast of Bucharest. Guest of honour at the ceremony was the Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, who welomed the opening of the plant saying, “It is only by such investments that we can give people a well-paid job. I was glad to find out that part of the factory“s component line was manufactured in Romania”. “The groups of interests create jobs and I am referring here to the foreign investors, not the government. I propose that this year we privatize the carmakers based in Craiova, we are in talks with the investors in this respect and, as far as I understand, part of the Craiova glass factory is meant for future investments that also target the expansion of auto window production; Romania will thus become an engineering pole in Central and Eastern Europe”, Mr. Tariceanu said. In November 2006, Saint-Gobain Glass Romania increased the share capital of the unit that operates the Calarasi float glass plant with an injection of EUR 11 million; the company“s underwritten capital stands at EUR 129 million. Saint-Gobain expects to generate an output of 600 tonnes of glass per day from the plant. Half of the output will be sold in Romania and half in Germany, Poland, Turkey, Bulgaria and other countries of southeastern Europe, according to a statement. Saint-Gobain Glass Romania operates in three business sectors: construction materials, glass and high-performance materials.
