Qinghai Kunlun Alkali Company Limited held a ceremony in August 2008 to celebrate the initiation of a one-million-tonne-per-year soda ash project in Delingha (Qinghai province), western China. The scheduled investment is CNY 2.5 billion and startup is planned for August 2010. The project is being carried out jointly by Inner Mongolia Lantai Industry Company Limited and Qinghai Haixi Mengxi Alkali Company Limited. It will be the third soda ash line in Delingha. Zhejiang Glass Company Limited set up Qinghai Alkali Company Limited in Delingha Industrial Park in 2003 and spent CNY 4 billion to build two soda ash production lines with annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. The first phase came on stream in 2007. Construction on the second phase was started at the end of 2007 with an investment of CNY 1.78 billion and nearly CNY 900 million had been spent by the end of July 2008. Qinghai Alkali Company Limited said that the purchased facilities are available at the site, and construction of infrastructure and the underground pipeline network has been completed. The second phase will come on stream at the end of 2008 helping the company reach annual production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes. Together with the new Qinghai Kunlun Alkali project, Delingha will have a total soda ash capacity of 3.4 million by 2010.
