25 March 1999: US-based Praxair, Inc. has announced the installation of its new proprietary burner technology at Gallo Glass Co., based in Modesto, California, which can boost production 15% and lower potential air emissions by up to 50%. According to a company statement, the WideFlame burner technology developed by Praxair delivers a low momentum flame that is 200% wider than a conventional oxy-fuel burner flame. The increased flame coverage transfers heat more efficiently into the molten bath and eliminates hot spots on the glass surface reducing glass batch volatilization and improving furnace refractory life. The technology lowers potential particulate emissions and produces 50% less nitrogen oxides (NOx) than conventional oxy-fuel burners. Praxair said the WideFlame burner radiates energy into the glass melt quicker and more efficiently than other burners, reducing fuel consumption. It can also result in lower electric boosting requirements or higher pull rates than in conventional oxy-fuel burner operation. Gallo Glass Co. produces container glass, supplying bottles for the Gallo Winery. Praxair is a supplier of oxy-fuel technology and advanced oxygen supply systems to the glass industry.
