19 February 1998: The US firm Praxair Inc. reported an earning increase of 10% to US$ 106 million on sales of US$ 1.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 1997. A 26% increase in earnings was recorded for the full year, to US$ 422 million, with sales of US$ 4.7 billion increasing by 6%. Results of the South American operations fell below those in 1996, although performance in North America improved. In the first half of 1998, the company expects its performance to be the same as 1997, with a strong improvement forecast for the second half of 1998. Meanwhile, the loss of 800 jobs through restructuring in North America and Brazil has almost been completed.
