14 May 1998: Plate Glass & Shatterprufe Industries Ltd. (PGSI) of South Africa said it had acquired 38 auto glass replacement stores in Spain and New Zealand through its international arm for R 71.1 million. “These acquisitions secure for us a meaningful position in yet another country on the European continent and give us market leadership in New Zealand,” PGSI executive chairman Ronnie Lubner said in a statement. Belron International, PGSI“s offshore arm, now has a network of 1,655 glass replacement stores globally and is the market leader in both Canada and the United States, where it has more than 1,000 stores. Belron has operations in 16 countries covering 68% of the world“s car population.
