4 February 1999: US-based Pirelli Cables and Systems North America announced that its single-mode fibre optic cable products will be available with the new Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) Fiber with Duraclad(TM), which was designed especially to withstand intensive splicing, handling, and installation applications. Corning Incorporated recently announced the development of the new fibre. Company officials said Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) Fiber with Duraclad(TM) was developed specifically to withstand harsh environments experienced most often in local access, cable TV, utility and telephony applications, while maintaining compatibility with other commercially available fibres. Corning said the new fibre offers improved resistance to abrasion and fatigue and responds to customer needs for a robust fiber that meets the extraordinary demands caused by today“s shorter fiber spans, higher fiber-count cables and increased splicing and connection requirements, in addition to the environmental demands of outside installations. Corning also pointed out that increased durability and ease of installation offer cost-savings for system designing. Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) Fiber with Duraclad(TM) features a unique patented glass composition in the outer glass surface region, which adds toughness to better endure fiber stripping, termination, and bending. Corning noted that, because the Duraclad protection is integrated into the glass, it delivers sustainable mechanical performance not possible from coating solutions alone. Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) Fiber with Duraclad(TM) retains the same optical transmission properties and geometry specifications as Corning“s standard SMF-28 optical fibre, one of the world“s most extensively deployed fibres. Pirelli said its fibre optic cable will be available with Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) Fiber with Duraclad(TM) in production volumes in the first quarter of 1999. Pirelli offers a range of fiber optic cable products, including Dri-Flex(TM) loose tube cable with flexible buffer tubes and KleenCore(TM) dry water blocking technology; and RILT(TM), a ribbon-in-loose-tube design using ROL technology to provide efficient packaging of high-fiber counts. Pirelli“s 864-Fiber RILT(TM) Cable, introduced recently, offers the highest fiber count of any fiber optic cable commercially available in North America.
