Pilkington Plc has posted documents to its shareholders regarding the proposal announced on 25 May 2000 to acquire the Nippon Sheet Glass Group“s interests in certain Pilkington subsidiaries. The documents include notice of an extraordinary general meeting for the shareholders of Pilkington to approve the proposals. This will be held on 20 July 2000. Meanwhile, the group has invested UK 16 million in a new coatings facility in Sweden, in order to meet growing demand in Scandinavian countries for low-E and other energy-saving glass. Situated in the vicinity of Pilkington“s float glass factory, in Halmstad, the new plant is due to start operation in 2001. Production capacity will be for about 5 million square metres of vacuum-coated glass products per year. The market for energy-saving glass in Scandinavia is expected to grow by 50% over the next three years as a result of new legislation.
