Pilkington Automotive India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government for the construction of a new facility for glass and glazing products. Stephan Rosebroch, director of Pilkington Automotive India, signed the MoU with S. Bhattacharya, Commissioner of Industries of the state government, in the presence of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy. The firm is planning to build the INR 6.75 billion (USD 153 million) facility at Achutapuram Mandal in Visakhapatnam district state in a phased operation over a five year period. The project is expected to create around 1,500 jobs. The first phase will see the setting-up of a laminated windscreen facility with an investment of INR 750 million (USD 17 million). The facility is scheduled to start operation by May 2008. During the second and third phases, the company will build toughened and float glass manufacturing facilities. In November 2006, Pilkington announced plans to build a new glass manufacturing plant in the Abu Dhabi Industrial Development Zone to make clear and tinted glasses for the regional building products and automotive glass markets.
