US-based fibreglass and materials maker Owens Corning said it would invest US$ 13 million in Concord, North Carolina, to build a fabrication plant that would help to consolidate the production of two current operations in the area. The Concord facility would fabricate equipment for the company“s manufacturing plants making glass fibre insulation, reinforcements and yarns. “The new building will allow us to consolidate our two fabrication operations in one location, and being close to an international airport will make it easy for us to ship parts around the world,” said Jeffrey Smith, Owens Corning leader for the 61,000-square-foot facility, which will employ about 90 people. Due to the consolidation of operations, Owens Corning said it would have to lay off about 90 people. “We will also have to lay off about the same amount of people as will be employed at the new facility in the consolidation process,” added a spokeswoman at the company. The company is expected to begin production as early as next March. The company spokeswoman was unable to comment on the plant“s expected output capacity.
