Using joint financing with local Chinese corporations, Okura Corp. announced in December 1995 that, starting in 1997, it would be manufacturing grinding materials using the trace metal selium. Okura and Asahi Glass“s subsidiary Semi Chemical will provide 10% and 30% of the financing respectively. The remaining 55% will be provided by local corporations for the purposes of forming a joint corporation and constructing a factory with an annual production capacity of 1,200 tonnes. The grinding material to be manufactured will use selium excavated from Inner Mongolia and will be used to polish brown TV tubes, optical lenses and other items.
