Owens-Illinois, Inc. (O-I) has been honoured by the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) as a winner of the organization’s 2013 Clear Choice Awards. The awards programme recognizes achievements over the past year in creating innovative glass packages with shelf impact. Entries were judged on innovation, package design (including container label and closure), and consumer appeal.
Four products manufactured by O-I were selected as winners. Kona Longboard Island Lager was selected as the winner of the beer category. Jack Daniel’s Unaged Tennessee Rye was selected as the winner in the spirits category. Starbucks Iced Coffee was selected as the winner in the non-alcoholic beverage category. Tostitos Salsa’s football jar was selected as the winner in the food category.
The panel of independent judges included Robert Bush, professor, Department of Sustainable Biomaterials, Virginia Tech University; Andrew Kaplan, managing editor, Beverage World magazine; Silvio Marcacci, lead contributor, Lost in the Beer Aisle blog; and Rick Edwards, head bartender of a major Washington, D.C. restaurant and bar.
“The entries for this year’s Clear Choice Awards showcased a trend in the artistry and value-add that glass packaging provides to the consumer,” said Lynn Bragg, president of the GPI. “Nothing communicates purity, quality and value to consumers like a well-designed glass package.”
“This year’s winners demonstrate that glass effortlessly conveys a superior image,” said Shawn Welch, vice president of sales and marketing for O-I. “Numerous food and beverage companies recognize that glass is the optimal packaging choice because it preserves the integrity of their products, is 100% and endlessly recyclable, and provides unmatched product differentiation on store shelves.”
The 2013 Clear Choice Awards winners receive benefit from industry-wide recognition and brand-building promotion. The winning products are also on display at PACK EXPO, a leading industry trade show that runs September 23 to 25 in Las Vegas.
