19 November 1998: Malaysia“s Leader Optic Fibre Cable Sdn Bhd (LOFC), a subsidiary of Leader Universal Holdings Berhad, has entered into a shareholders“ agreement with Corning International Corporation which will see the local company gaining world class expertise on the manufacture of optical fibre cables, according to a recent press report. Leader Universal“s general manager K.A. Sree Vijayanayagam said the agreement would allow Corning to subscribe for a minority stake in LOFC for RM 10.6 million. “The strategic joint-venture between LOFC and Corning would bring about the manufacturing of world class optical fibre cable to the growing Malaysian telecommunications market.” He said the co-operation would also see LOFC using Corning“s patented Outside Vapour Deposition technology. LOFC is principally involved in the manufacture of optical fibre cables. Its customers include local and international telecommunications operators.
