18 February 1999: LangkawiiCrystaal, a leading Malaysian exporter of crystal-made novelty items, said it is confident that its sales for this year will be 10 times higher than last. Its group managing director Abdoul Rahman Abdullah said that although a recession was on, the company“s sales had significantly increased from the time it was established in 1996. Abdullah said the company“s product range of over 180 novelty items have received good responses locally as well from markets in South East Asia and Europe. While he declined to disclose the actual sales figure, Abdullah said that the company had set a minimum sales target of RM 3.8 million (US$ 1 million) for last year. He said LangkawiiCrystaal, which has its own marketing company, planned to develop more distribution channels throughout Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Abdullah disclosed that the company was expecting a major new order from the famous Harrods department store in London for a souvenir product. Early last year, LangkawiiCrystaal supplied more than RM 200,000 worth of crystal products to London“s famous high-fashion outlet. The company“s factory in Jalan Kisap is capable of producing an average of 1.5 tonnes of crystal products per day.
