11 December 1997: The Malaysian container glass firm Kuala Lumpur Glass Manufacturers Co. Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nylex Malaysia Bhd., is to spend some M$ 200 million to upgrade its existing plant in Petaling Jaya. It will also spend about M$ 50-60 million for new equipment over the next few years. Most of the company“s current equipment is imported from the US, Germany and Sweden. About 70% of Kuala Lumpur Glass Manufacturers“ production capacity is for domestic consumption in Malaysia and Singapore while the rest is for exports to other South-East Asian countries, as well as Hong Kong, West Asia, and Australia. The company has a workforce of 350, working in four shifts on a 24-hour basis. The factory has two furnaces with a total capacity of 360 tonnes per day, and five machine lines. It is currently working towards ISO accreditation and is expected to obtain it early in 1998. It is also working towards producing lighter and stronger glass containers in order, it says, to maintain its viability in the future. Valmiera: glass fibre figures for 1997 Latvia“s Valmiera glass fibre company produced a turnover of lats 8,626,871 during the first ten months of 1997 and earned a net profit of lats 623,274. While the company“s net profit in nine months of the year was lats 541,160, its management predicted that the net profit would be some lats 800,000 for the whole of 1997. -jp
