Demand for new glass in Japan is set to more than double by 2015 according to a report released by the New Glass Forum. The report, entitled “The New Glass Market in 2015”, predicts that new glass demand in Japan, which surpassed JPY 1 trillion (USD 9.3 billion) in 2004, will more than double to JPY 2.38 trillion in 2015. The forum also sees use of nanometer-sized glass rising to JPY 380 billion in 2015. The major contributor to the rise is display glass, which is expected to maintain a year-on-year growth rate of 10%. Selective absorption and/or reflection auto glass is also expected to experience favorable growth. By usage, electric and electronic components are projected to show a large rise and to take an equal share of the market alongside optical components from 2010. Among electronic components, it is predicted that demand for new glass will continue to grow mainly for use in LCD and plasma display panels, reaching JPY 575.8 billion in 2015, more than twice the current level. For optical components, optical fiber will be on a recovery trend and photo masks will grow steadily.
