Japanese glass companies making substrates for liquid-crystal displays are set to substantially expand their production capacity in response to increased efforts by electronics makers in South Korea and Taiwan to produce larger LCDs and further raise output. Asahi Glass Co. is spending JPY 12 billion on a 70% increase in production of LCD glass substrates at a plant in Hyogo Prefecture, beginning in October 2003. Nippon Electric Glass Co. is to install a JPY 10 billion kiln for large LCD substrates at a plant in Shiga Prefecture in order to raise output capacity by 50% from July 2003. The company also plans to build a JPY 3 billion glass substrate processing plant in Taiwan which is expected to become operational in about a year.
