Japan“s Shotoku Glass Co. and recycler Sawaya are to produce and sell tableware and vases made from fluorescent tubes that have had their mercury removed. The selling point for the products will be health and sustainability. Sawaya will collect used fluorescent lamps from the Hokuriku and Tokai regions. At its plants, Sawaya will crush the tubes, use a heating process to remove the mercury, and ship the product to Shotoku Glass. Shotoku Glass will sell a range of 17 items, including vases and tableware, at Japanese variety stores in Tokyo from 1 March 2006. A bud vase will have a price tag of around JPY 1,500, while cups and salad bowls are likely to sell for about JPY 1,000-2,000. The firm is targeting sales of roughly JPY 60 million for the first year.
