Shaukat Aziz, Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs, formally inaugurated the installed facilities at the Modernization and Expansion Projects of ICI Pakistan“s soda ash Plant in Khewra, on Saturday, 6 April 2002. ICI Pakistan has been investing in the expansion of its soda ash manufacturing facilities in Khewra, consistently to ensure that the demand for this essential raw material is adequately met. The original plant capacity has been increased, through a number of expansion projects. The latest Modernisation and Expansion Projects include installation of DCS Control System, 5.2 MW co-generation installation and de-bottlenecking of various units, at a total cost of INR 525 million. The soda ash market in Pakistan is continuing to grow and ICI“s experience in the soda ash business for more than 50 years is an asset to the company in the face of changing markets and emergent competition. The company uses this competitive advantage along with continued improvement in efficiencies, control over fixed costs, improved productivity and above all a sustained market share and strong customer loyalty to continue to he the market leader in the soda ash industry in Pakistan. ICI Pakistan“s soda ash plant expansion and modernization at Khewra will place the Business in a position of strength to face them challenges. This project symbolizes ICI“s commitment to growth and success and demonstrates its continued focus towards improving the quality of service to its customers and the community. 2002 marks the 58th Anniversary of ICI Pakistan“s soda ash plant in Khewra. While the initial work on setting up the plant dates back to 1929, commercial production began in 1944. The business diversified its product range in 1995 with the commissioning of a 10,000 tons refined sodium bicarbonate plant. To improve the quality of product and operating efficiencies “Total Quality“ was introduced to the soda ash business in 1985 and management initiatives and consistency of manufacturing excellence led to ISO-9002 certification in 1999.
