Glassware manufacturer Houze Glass Co., in Point Marion, southern Pennsylvania, closed on 22 December 2004, said Brenda Murray, vice president of Local 547 of the United Steelworkers union, which represents 44 workers at the plant. The firm had been in business for 102 years. November 2004 also saw the closure of two other regional glassworks: Glenshaw Glass in Pittsburgh and Anchor Glass in South Connellsville. The two plants had a combined work force of over 600. Murray said workers were informed on 8 December 2004 about the possibility of a 22 December 2004 shutdown. “I think what made it harder for everyone is, we knew we had no jobs but they continued to want us to work,” she said. “There“s people who have been there for 40 years.”
